Graphic File Formats

If you are reading this blog, you may have some information about file types. Again, we tried to explain them here in a simple way.

Raster file type:

Raster images are constructed by a series of pixels, or individual blocks, to form an image. JPEG, GIF, PNG, and PSD are all raster image extensions. Every photo you find online or in print is a raster image.
Pixels have a defined proportion based on their resolution (high or low), and when the pixels are stretched to fill space they were not originally intended to fit, they become distorted, resulting in blurry or unclear images.

Vector file type:

A vector graphic is different than a raster graphic. It’s made up of a few dots called anchor points. You can enlarge a vector as much as you want, and it will never lose quality. That’s because each anchor point contains all the information necessary to redraw the image mathematically anytime you change the size.
Best part? You don’t need to know any math to use it. You do need a program like Adobe Illustrator to create vector graphics, but you can use existing vectors in programs like Photoshop and CorelDRAW.

What is a JPG File?

JPG is a widely used compressed image format for containing digital images. It is the most common image format used in digital cameras, different operating systems, and on the Internet.
A compression ratio of 10:1 can be applied in JPG images without losing significant details, that results in a smaller file size which allows sharing and storing of images easier, the degree of compression in JPG file is adjustable. That means the image data can be saved with Minimum to maximum compression as per the user’s taste.
JPG images are great for photographs and realistic paintings, plus most programs can open JPG file format.

What is an EPS File?

EPS file format is short for Encapsulated PostScript and was created by Adobe back in 1992. It’s a standard graphics file format intended for placing images or drawings within a PostScript Document. Basically, it’s a postscript program saved as a single file.
EPS file also includes a low-resolution preview of the graphics inside which makes it accessible with programs not capable of editing the script inside.
EPS file format supports layers and groups, it is widely used by graphic designers and publishers because of its compatibility across different operating systems.
Adobe illustrator, IrfanView, GIMP, and CorelDRAW can open EPS file format.

What is PSD File?

A Photoshop Document (PSD) file is an entirely editable file format that saves the exact state of a document—text, shapes, layers, masks, effects, and all. While a standard image file is generally quite small, contains a flat image, and is single-layered, a Photoshop document can be quite large, holds a lot of information, and is usually multi-layered; This makes it an ideal format for image editing.
PSD files can contain 30,000 pixels of image data in height and width, and a file can be up to 2 gigabytes in size.
Often PSD files are used as templates that can be flattened into print-ready formats such as PNG or JPG. It is the most used image format for editing purposes by graphic designers, producers, and other users.
Adobe Photoshop, IrfanView, GIMP, and CorelDRAW can open PSD file format.
